DESIGN

Designed by Canadian artist Dave Melnychuk, the coin’s reverse is a forest-themed celebration of spring. The central motif features the Tree of Paradise (or the Tree of Life), a foundational symbol that represents renewal and creation, health and wisdom, a long life and eternal youth. The Tree’s fruit-bearing branches represent the days of the week and the anticipation of spring. The crowned kings of the forest, two noble deer stand on each side of the Tree and above the River of Paradise, where they symbolize wealth, prosperity and strength. Eight stars appear along the edge of the design, where these radiating symbols of good fortune form an eternity band that surrounds the central motif. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

“With each pysanka coin, I think of my Baba (grandmother) and what she’d find beautiful and joyful. I also want each design to stand on its own while complementing the three previous gold pysanka coins, two of which I was given the honour to design. These themes and motifs have been used throughout the ages to represent the higher strivings of humanity; the fact that they are shared among various world religions is a sign of their universality—they are relatable to all Canadians but they still maintain their essentially Ukrainian form and meaning."
