The Kookaburra series of the Perth Mint remains one of the most highly collected and popular bullion series. Released in 1990, the iconic series has spanned 32 editions with mintage figures, never exceeding 500,000 total coins. The 2021 rendition of the Kookaburra maintains the Perth mint's lofty standards, combining a dynamic and ever-changing reverse design, meticulous attention to detail, and advanced security features all into one highly sought after, 9999 pure coin!
The reverse side of this coin's 2021 adaptation illustrates a jovial Kookaburra perched upon a Eucalyptus tree branch, a familiar sight to all those who have been to Australia. The image is brought to life using texturing to depict the bird's feathers, the tree branches bark, and the leaves that adorn it.
The obverse contains the contemporary effigy of her Majesty, Queen Elisabeth II, with the Perth mint again demonstrating the extent of their attention to detail, particularly with the Queen's crown. The effigy has been placed over a blank field and encapsulated by a ring containing her title, the nation of issue, and the coins denominational value.
The Perth Mint opened in 1899 as the British Royal Mint's 3rd branch in Australia. The historical Hay Street location handled gold refining until moving to a modern facility in April 1990. Ownership of the mint was transferred to the Government of Western Australia in July of 1970. Under an agreement with the Commonwealth Treasury, they were empowered to mint and market gold, silver, and platinum as Australian legal tender to investors and collectors worldwide. Today, they are amongst one of the elite world mints whose pure gold, silver, and platinum items are trusted without question. Items such as the Australian Nugget, Silver Coin Series (Kangaroo, Kookaburra, Koala, and Platypus to name a few), as well as the Australian Lunar Gold and Silver Coin Series are extensively sought after by bullion investors worldwide.
