The reverse features the legendary Duke Leopold V of Austria, donning full regalia, with sword primed and banners flying in a high wind.

The only inscription interrupting this dynamic and poignant effigy is the number ‘1194,’ (A.D.) at the end of which year Leopold met his savage fate…after a fall from his steed, A solider then was forced to amputate his foot, which led to a nasty infection and Leopold’s eventual death by gangrene.

The obverse is home to a portrait one of Leopold’s own crusading party, shown in stylized relief, at arms atop his trusty mount.

Also on the obverse, you’ll find the Austrian legend, as well as the unique denominational value of the coin, its metal content, its weight and the year of its release.

The Vienna Mint was founded on the ransom, in silver, which was paid by the desperate people of England, in return for the release of their King, Richard ‘The Lionheart,’ whom Leopold had cunningly seen fit to hold hostage, after the two had had a heated meeting of tempers in 1191.
